Discovering Mount Zion, Colorado
Mount Zion was once located at the intersection of what is now Colorado Highway 66 and County Road 7. The community was named for the Mt. Zion United Brethren church that was located at the intersection of what is now Colorado Highway 66 and Weld County Road 7.
The church congregation moved to Mead in 1907, leaving the building behind. Eventually it was sold to the Catholic church and moved to Mead in November of 1911.
By the time the church was moved to Mead, the Mt. Zion community as it once was known, had ceased to exist. Eventually, most people started to refer to it as Liberty Hall, which actually was a mile west.
The most well-known family from this area were the Kiteley's. Other prominent families included the Webbs, Mulligans, and Ballingers.

Mount Zion United Brethren Church
I've never found a photo of the Mount Zion UB church when it was in its original location, so I am showing it after it was moved to Mead and became the Guardian Angels Catholic church.
Hazel Webb Dalziel described its apperance in her book, "Joyful Childhood Membories of A Pioneer Woman." pub. 1988.
"It was painted white, had a spire and held ten pews with a bench along the back. In front was the rostrum with the organ to one side, on the other side a potbellied stove."

Seed Corn Elevator
Tom and Ernest “Ernie,” sons of Mark and Gertrude (Spencer) Kiteley, circa 1940, with their new seed corn elevator.
The Kiteley family of the Mount Zion/ Liberty Hall area was in the foreground of the development of a hybrid corn seed that could successfully grow in the short northern Colorado growing season.

Webb-Mulligan Threshing Outfit
William P. Mulligan and Charles Benjamin Webb formed a threshing company based in the Mount Zion area.
As with other threshing companies, during the harvest season, they traveled around the area and often adjoining states, threshing the wheat and barley. This was a huge job and accomplished with teams of men.
My grandmother used to talk about what it was like when the threshing crew came. She would spend the whole day cooking huge meals for them, and making sure they had other accomadations as needed. She loved it as it was a time to meet new friends and see old ones. Not to mention that she loved cooking for large groups.
